The Vance Center has been the promoter of the pro bono in Central and South America.
As executive director, she was named Leire Larracoechea. As president and vice president, José Luis de Castro and Valentín García have been appointed, respectively.
THE CONCEPT AND THE DENOMINATION
Pro bono means "for the public good". The Pro Bono Foundation was born out of a social concern; It intends to assist entities or groups of people who for some reason can not afford their needs for advice, defense or legal accompaniment.
The foundation itself will provide consultants who require training, tools and the necessary support to provide such assistance; they will be legal professionals, universities and NGOs, among others.
The task of the Foundation also implies the promotion and dissemination of its activity, in order to achieve a real reach towards its possible beneficiaries.
THE MAIN OBJECTIVES
Under the motto "adding to the legal pro bono", its three main objectives are exposed:
- Facilitate access to professional advisory services and specialized legal assistance to entities or collectives of persons who, for economic or other reasons, have difficulty accessing said services;
- Provide all the actors involved -bortion, universities and other sectors- with the necessary tools to create synergies and optimize the scope of their work.
- Offer all legal professionals a channel of effective participation, with the common purpose of promoting justice and real equality of all citizens before the Law.
A CLASSIC CLAIM
With the configuration of this system in Spain, the Foundation covers an old need. For a long time, although there have been actions of assistance to groups that do not have access to justice, they have been isolated and of little coverage.
The pro bono action goes beyond legally assisting the most vulnerable groups for free. The purpose of this assistance is linked to causes of greater social scope and satisfaction of different rights.
For example, the actions carried out can positively affect issues related to the environment, non-discrimination, cultural heritage, fair trade, etc. Even the actions of this project would be developed in response to government actions that could harm social sectors.
With this disinterested professional exercise, a positive impact on the validity of the Rule of Law and equality before the Law is expected.
